Rivers, Ruins and Rainforest is Pai Dai's low carbon journey through central and southern Thailand, designed so the sustainable choices are the trip itself, not an add on. You explore Bangkok's green lung and car free islands by bicycle, glide the Chao Phraya on the public river boats, and cycle the temple ruins of Ayutthaya, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Instead of a domestic flight south, you travel on the overnight sleeper train to Surat Thani, then reach the Khao Sok rainforest, one of the oldest evergreen forests on earth. There you stay in a floating raft house on Cheow Lan Lake and a riverside jungle lodge, and explore by longtail boat, canoe and quiet forest walk. Throughout, you stay in independent, locally owned places, travel with licensed local guides, and use no domestic flights. It is a real holiday that treads lightly, built around genuine nature, heritage and community.

Weather, and how we adapt

Central Thailand is hot year round; the southern rainforest is greenest after the rains. The itinerary runs all year, with river and lake conditions best outside the heaviest monsoon weeks.

Good to know

Before you ask

What makes this a sustainable package?+

The itinerary was built by scoring each supplier against sustainability criteria and choosing the strongest. Its low carbon transport is the journey itself: bicycles, public river boats, trains and an overnight sleeper in place of a domestic flight. You stay in independent, locally owned places, travel with licensed local guides, and spend time in national parks with wildlife watched only from a respectful distance. We are also working to add recognised eco certification of our accommodation partners over time.

Why is there no elephant activity?+

We only include wildlife experiences that are observation based, with no riding, shows or forced contact. Because we cannot yet verify an elephant venue that meets that standard, we have chosen to leave elephants out of this package rather than include an experience we could not stand behind.

How do we get from Bangkok to Khao Sok without flying?+

You travel south on the overnight sleeper train to Surat Thani in a private berth, then by a short road transfer into Khao Sok. It replaces a domestic flight with a comfortable, much lower carbon journey, and is part of the experience.

Is the overnight train comfortable?+

Yes. You travel in an air conditioned second class sleeper berth with bedding provided. Berths sell out in the Thai high season, so we book early; if a particular date is full we use a comfortable, right sized coach instead, still with no domestic flight.

How much cycling is involved, and what fitness is needed?+

The cycling is gentle and mostly flat, on quiet car free routes in Bang Krachao and around the Ayutthaya ruins. It suits most reasonably active travellers, and distances can be adjusted.

Can the itinerary be tailored?+

Yes. Nights, pace and activities can be adjusted to suit your group while keeping the low carbon, low impact character of the trip.

When is the best time to travel?+

November to February is the most comfortable window, but the journey runs throughout the year.
